More Red Flags That Work In Books But Wouldn't Fly In Real Life

We were all head over heels for Edward Cullen back in the day, but looking back, the dude was hella creepy. Watching Bella while she slept? No thanks, I'll pass! Even though we're all over the toxic, possessive boyfriend in books, none of us would actually stand for that sh*t IRL. In a recent ASkWomen subreddit thread, women discuss what they're super into in books, but are total red flags in reality. Scroll down to see all the toxic tropes they brought up.

Red Flags That We Love To See In Fiction, But Would Be A Hard Pass In Real Life

In real life, we like to have standards for ourselves. We wouldn't appreciate it if a random guy showed up at our house unannounced, or threw rocks at our window in the middle of the night, you see, that's called trespassing. But in movies, books, plays, we eat all that sh*t up like a steaming bowl of brown sugar oatmeal. A troubled boy who has slight anger issues and treats most women terribly? Sounds like a classic love interest from an erotic novel, and obviously we're rooting for him.

Summaries Of Classic Books You Can Read In Under A Minute

Let's take a trip down memory lane to when you were a teenager in school. You're sitting in English class, Pride and Prejudice is open in front of you, it's long, and you're struggling to stay awake. You stayed up all night talking to your crush on the phone, and you haven't read the book, despite having a test on it tomorrow. There's no way you can physically read the whole thing in one night even if you wanted to; the language is too complicated. It's not an Instagram post; it's looooong AF! If only there were a condensed version that you could skim through on your bus ride home after school, you would ace that test, no problem. Well, now it does; Book-A-Minute is a website that as "taken all kinds of great works of literature and boiled them down to their essence, extracting all the filler (and believe me, there's a lot of it sometimes). In just one minute, you can read entire books and learn everything your teachers will expect you to know." It's genius, it's hilarious, and I love these condensed literary classics I never read when I was younger. It's like scrolling through an Instagram feed, but Shakespeare and Steinbeck are the influencers.

Dark And Raunchy ABC Book For Adults

Learning the ABC is a significant milestone for children because it is the first step towards learning how to read and write. Most children use alphabet books with corresponding pictures or information to help them memorize the letters; A is for apple, B is for ball. The pictures help capture the imagination of children and also learn about the world. But who says education needs to stop at adulthood? Illustrator Toby Leigh has created ABC for Adults — "twisting the meaning of innocent, childlike words into hysterically funny yet terrifying adult themes." According to his website, Toby made the parody version of "the classic ABC books from yesteryear" because, "Unfortunately, we all grew up and became paranoid, cynical adults filled with fear and hatred. But don't despair, this new book will help guide you and your family through this difficult phase of your existence." Check out a sample of the hilarious works below, where H is for heart attack, and Z is for zippers… in bondage suits.

Funny, Satirical Middle-Aged Harry Potter Books

You may have thought that magic would stop Harry Potter from falling into the usual mid-life crisis pitfalls that befall us all, but you'd be wrong. Or at least you would be, according to SomeECards, who have reimagined Harry Potter as a slightly dull, balding white-collar worker. These funny but sad stories probably aren't what J. K. Rowling had in mind for Harry following the events in Deathly Hallows, but I guess even wizards peak at some point, and then, as with the rest of us, it's downhill from there.

Ways Parents Tricked Their Young Children Into Loving Reading

If your kids love reading, it's essential to do everything you can to encourage that passion. But anyone with kids will know that anything they perceive to be your idea, they automatically don't want to be a part of, even if it will benefit them. So one dad, Professor. Robert McNees shared his trick on how to get his daughter to love reading, using reverse psychology. He Tweeted, "Somehow, I've lucked out and have an 8yo who thinks secretly reading under the covers past her bedtime is an act of rebellion, and it hasn't yet occurred to her that her flashlights never seem to run out of batteries."

This simple life hack inspired others to Tweet the ways their parents duped them into becoming bookworms too, and it seems like it's quite a common phenomenon. Kids love reading, and parents love it when their children read; if only they could work together towards a shared goal without the need for trickery!
